Some of the nation’s best amateur boxers will step into the ring from 6:30 tonight when the curtains go up on the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Champion of Champions boxing tournament which culminates tomorrow night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
While boxing buffs would want to see such pugilists as Republican Nankumar Singh, Keeve Allicock and Dexter ‘Chucky’ Wray in action, they will be another pugilist that intends to set the Homestretch Avenue facility alight.
He is 24 years old Trevis Hall, a former resident of Plaisance who had migrated to the USA 16 years ago.
Hall has returned home at the bidding of head of BrisO Promotions, Seon Bristol to participate in the tournament.
He arrived in Guyana late yesterday afternoon and subsequently attended the weigh in and medical examination ceremony staged at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
A small framed, compact boxer, Hall told this reporter that he started his career in 2007 in the USA, some 13 years after leaving these shores.
He said that he has always nurtured a deep love for the sport and would visit the gym when his uncle, Randy Hall was engaged in sparring sessions. Hall admitted that his uncle never made it big in the sport nevertheless he (Travis) vowed to don gloves one day.
He said that his big chance came in 2009 when he joined the Irish Ropes Boxing Club to hone his skills. Less than 6 months later, he entered the Golden Gloves championships and won the featherweight title. He said that earlier this year he attempted to replicate that feat but lost in the semifinals.
He attributes the loss to his fluctuating weight. “I eventually came in at 123lbs, three below the limit and I was not as strong as I should have been,” Hall intimated.
He further disclosed that after speaking with Bristol whom he met after one of his training sessions, he decided to travel to Guyana to participate in the current championships. “I strongly believe I have the potential and talent to win this tournament,” he said. “
Really, I wish to represent Guyana in the 2012 Olympics in England and this tournament will allow me to test the waters while the local officials can assess my skill,” said Hall.
Quizzed on his boxing style the young man said, “I am more of a boxer but I pack a good punch. He also said that this is the first time that he is fighting out of the USA. “I hope that boxing fans will come out to see me because I intend to turn in good performances,” said he.
The Champion of Champions tournament is the final one on GABA’s calendar of activity for the year.
It is fittingly dubbed the ‘Champion of Champions’ since it will feature all of the champions from the various tournaments staged throughout the year. Boxers from several gyms in Georgetown and its environs will duke it out for honours.
Some of those gyms vying for the champion gym prize are the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles (HE), Republican Boxing Gym (REP), Ricola Boxing Gym (RIC) and the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG).
Boxers from the rural areas will continue to stake a claim for the many titles at stake and boxing buffs could look forward to intense battles from pugilists out of the North West Boxing gym, Timerhi Warriors and the Kwakwani Boxing gym.
