Stephenson cops Guyana’s first medal at Invitational Meet in T&T

Guyana’s Jessica Stephenson started her Invitational Meet hosted by Marlins Swim Club in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) on Thursday by winning a silver medal in the 400m freestyle in 5:03.61 (5.5 seconds better than her previous PB) and in the same race Athena Gaskin also swam extremely well finishing 8th in 5:15.25 and bettering her PB by 10 seconds.
The T&T based Stephenson is Guyana’s multiple breast stroke gold medallist from Carifta, but had been working with her coach on some of her free-style events as well.
Guyana’s other entries on the first of the 4 day Meet were all in the 50m backstroke with Soroya Simmons placing 4th in the girls 13-14 with a 35.74; Niall Roberts swimming with the Trinidad Youth Olympian Christian Homer in the 15 and over event, finished joint 7th in a new time of 30.55; Noelle Smith in the girls event finished 11th with 37.38 and young Hannibal Gaskin swimming in the boys 11-12 achieved a new PB to finish 24th with 38.94.
Marlins Invitational Meet is the largest Meet in the Region with over 350 swimmers from the Caribbean – including swimmers from Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados, Jamaica, Suriname and Antigua together with a small team all the way from Sweden.
The Meet is used by the top swimmers to start their quest for qualification times for the big inter-regional and international Meets of 2011 such as Carifta and Junior Commonwealth.
