A gig at a club in Trinidad last evening means the arrival of King of the Dancehall King, Beenie Man, had to wait for today, and we’re hoping that’s “OK” for tonight’s concert at the National Stadium.
It means that Beenie Man missed the pre-concert press conference yesterday at the Princess Hotel, but the Soca Queen, Destra, and up and coming Richie Loop of “My Cupp” fame (as in “What’s in my cup, stays in my cup,” if you’re having trouble coming up with the song in your head) promised a fantastic show. Future Fambo is also in the line-up for the show that has been titled ‘It’s OK.”
A waiver of government taxes means that the organizers, Conscious Minds, could put the ticket price at just $1,000. As Public Relations Officer Mondale Smith put it, “That’s a pre-Christmas gift.” Really, there is no chance you could get a show with Beenie Man and Destra for that price anywhere in the world.
Destra, no stranger to Guyana, said she is glad to be back and to make Guyana her stomping ground before heading into Trinidad’s carnival.
“I’m just excited,” are the only words the Soca Queen, now with a 10-month-old baby girl, used to describe her feelings heading into tonight’s concert.
“I take my art form seriously,” she said, and given that performing in the Caribbean means performing at home, Destra promises an “amazing show.”
Iana Lewis, of the promotion group, said the concert would be like no other.
Richie Loop, an unassuming youth from Jamaica, has a simple rule: go out and entertain. He is not interested in what rank he has in the music business. He is leaving that up to those who enjoy his music.
His single ‘My Cupp” is a nice, catchy song that could have you swaying easily, and his easy-to-smile personality could help him to eventual stardom. Guyana might just be his first gig out of Jamaica and he is ready for it.
‘It’s a great feeling; I’m ready for the show,” he told reporters. And he had a tip for those planning to attend the show: don’t “dress up” too much.
Tickets for the show are available at Ashmins.
