The GCF because it is one of the better run sports entities in Guyana, even though it is a very young Federation.
Kumar informed that Sports Minister Dr Frank Anthony has played a major role in the revival of Chess in Guyana since he assumed the top position in the Sports Ministry.
“Dr Anthony is an avid follower of Chess and quite a good player himself so he has a personal interest in this sport and has ensured that this game is played at all of our days of inter action as the game is spread across the country.
We are very pleased with the progress of the Federation over the last three years and will continue to support Chess in Guyana,” Kumar said.
Kumar said that it was good to see Chess being included at the Inter Guiana games level and Guyana putting up a good showing adding that he hoped next year the annual schools tournament is played earlier in the year so that the outstanding students could be available for selection on Guyana’s Inter Guiana games team.
Kumar said he was confident the money for the staging of the tournament will be well spent in a transparent.
King said the Sports Ministry would be signing the contract for the construction of the Athletics track at Lenora today with Courtney Benn Construction Company and remained committed to helping in the development of sports and sportspersons in Guyana.
“The Minister has a vested interest in Chess, a sport which many felt was dead in Guyana and we have seen so much improvement in such a short time,” King revealed.
King informed that it’s the Minister’s wish that no less than 100 schools are involved in next year’s tournament.
GCF President Errol Tiwari explained that the national schools championship is the country’s most important tournament since the youths of are the future of Chess in Guyana.
“We want to focus on youth development and our emphasis is in the schools. By next year we want to see schools in every area playing Chess.
That’s the Minister’s desire also so we will be doing a lot of work next year in the schools,” Tiwari said.
