Sports organizers have often complained of the paucity of solid support for their promotions even though these programmes have served as developmental factors to all stakeholders. Despite the obvious lack of enthusiasm of some corporate entities to render support, there are those that continue to be chivalric; pouring valuable dollars into the cause.
Yesterday afternoon, one such entity, Metro Office and Computer Supplies, demonstrated staunch corporate support when it joined several other business organizations in support of the Kennard Memorial Turf Club Xmas Meet slated for Boxing Day, December 26.
There will be a total of 9 races and each race was sponsored by a particular business place. When the sponsorship input is added up, more than five million dollars in prizes will be on offer.
The feature attraction, the B and Lower over a distance of 9 furlongs is sponsored exclusively by Metro Office and Computer Supplies of Quamina Street. The winner of this event also carts off the Mr. and Ms Deo Kharag Memorial trophy.
Chief Executive Officer (Metro), Mr. Taajnauth Jadunauth presented the cheque valued at approximately two million dollars to Justice Kennard in the presence of members of his staff and media operatives. He reiterated his organization’s support for the development of local sports and more particularly, the staging of the race in contention.
Several other sponsors are on board and include Republic Bank which sponsors the race among the 2 years old horses; Pomeroon Oil Mills and Pharmagen Enterprise, Neil and Massy; Muneshwar’s Ltd; Mohammed’s Enterprise; Cummings Electrical and Torginal Paints.
Justice Kennard relayed his heartfelt gratitude for the support rendered by all of the corporate entities and reiterated the value of such support. He reminded that this is the second year in succession that the Kharag family will be sponsoring the event and he also conveyed his gratitude to them.
Several other races will whet the appetite of horse race lovers including the F and Lower Class race over 6 furlongs sponsored by Neil and Massy. The winner takes home a handy sum of $250,000 and the second place, one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars. The third and fourth places receive$63,000 and $32, 000, respectively.
Then there is the I3 Maiden and J and Lower class event over 6 furlongs sponsored by Mohammed’s Enterprise of Lombard Street, Georgetown, the K and L Division over 6 furlongs sponsored by P&P Insurance and the G and Lower Class over 7 furlongs also sponsored by Neil and Massy.
Activities culminate with the ‘I and Lower Class’ event over 7 furlongs sponsored by Cummings Electrical. In this race the winner carts off$150,000 while the jockey coming in second receives $75,000. The third and fourth place finishers win $38,000 and $19,000 respectively. Several other exciting races are expected to form a part of the activities for the day.
Among some of the animals that will be on show are Annie’s Playmate and On the Rock With Salt, two American bred animals, The Message, Marathon Man, Night Crescendo and Miss Republic among others. The organizers anticipate that the inclement weather would abate enough to facilitate the races.
Meanwhile, horse owners are reminded that all activities would be conducted under the aegis of the Guyana Horse Racing Authorities and there would be strict adherence to the rules. The owners of horses are required to pay $3,000 per horse at the time of registration. They are also advised to take their animals to be examined by the vet not later than 11:00hrs on race day. Interested persons may contact Justice Kennard (226-1399 or 623-7609) or Roopnarine Matadial (325-3192) for additional information.
