Dear Editor,
In Allisa Bacchus’ letter which appeared in Kaieteur News dated 12/16/10 under the heading, “ignoring facts glorifying aberrations”, Ms. Bacchus sought to justify the abhorrent behaviour of some by pointing to a mouthful of accusations.
From her ramblings it appears that she, assuming what she spurts out is true, subscribes to a motto which says that one bad act must be solved by countering with even a more disgraceful one.
In my letter, which she referred to I was simply pointing out the level at which some would go to disregard time, or occasion to achieve ill objectives.
Since the writer did not deny that some were planning to engage in acts to disrespect the Leader of the Opposition, at the funeral of the late Winston Murray, she knows fully well that what I highlighted is nothing but the truth.
The issue for her is that these people were right to use the man’s funeral to spew their vendetta. The problem with this thinking is that it indicates the level at which we, as a people have become.
Simply, reckless, uncaring, selfish and disrespectful even for the dead or the family of the deceased.
I don’t know whether all the claims Ms. Bacchus made against Mr. Corbin is true or not, and I can care less.
The point is he, despite having knowledge of what was happening and hearing all the words thrown at him, refused to use the occasion to bring himself to the level of those whose intention was to vilify him. I cannot stress that his attitude and character at that moment has left an indelible mark on the minds of many persons.
His actions were humane and dignified. One would have thought that if he is the kind of person Ms. Bacchus claims he is then he might have engaged his detractors on the day in question.
One must therefore, stop to think whether we can truly consider Ms. Bacchus’ comments seriously. Would Mr. Murray have appreciated the actions of those “disrupters”, I think not.
I am sorry if my observations, stated, affected Ms. Bacchus and her friends, but these public displays of intolerance and stubborn uncouthness should not be entertained in any decent society.
