Dear Editor,
It is often said that “courtesy is a small act but it packs a mighty wallop”. It is not everyday that members of the disciplined forces are extolled for their disposition of humility, generosity or courtesy towards civilians of this country.
As a matter of fact, more often than not, they receive tremendous flak from the public when they do not confirm or meet our expectations.
For some inexplicable reason, some members of the disciplined forces are of the opinion that they must be abrasive or bellow on top of their lungs in order to command respect from an individual who contravenes the law.
Admittedly, some of us who commit an offence can be rather confrontational and it is understandable if the officers reciprocate in a similar fashion. After all, we are humans and sometimes we inevitably lose control.
However, recently, whilst on my way home, a routine security check was being conducted in the vicinity of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) on the East Bank Demerara, as is customarily done in other parts of the country. Nonetheless, as I approached the barricades, the outstretched hand of an officer directed me onto the parapet of the road.
The officer subsequently approached my vehicle, greeted me to begin with and smiled at my sleeping infant.
He even shared a bit about his child as well before politely telling me that they are conducting a security check for ammunition among other things.
I permitted him to have a look at the contents of my vehicle, though he was seemingly reluctant since he did not want to disturb my son.
However, he did have a look at both the contents of my vehicle as well as my documents. After he was satisfied, he thanked me for complying.
I must say that that was an unprecedented encounter with any law enforcement officer that I have had, as far as I can remember.
There was no evidence of hostility, arrogance, aggression etc.
This officer’s approach has certainly reminded me that our disposition towards people can certainly create an indelible impression either positively or negatively.
