Fans and organisers could not have hoped for a better start to the 21st Edition of Guyana’s most prestigious football tournament, the Kashif and Shanghai which kicked off at the GFC ground last evening with two scintillating match-ups.
Defending champions BK International Western Tigers held their nerves to book a place in the quarterfinals with a nerve racking 3-2 win over a young but determined Buxton United unit.
The opening game of the tournament saw the first upset of this year’s spectacle when Liquid Gold of Bartica turned back the challenge of Georgetown’s Riddim Squad in an epic battle, 4-3 on penalty kicks following a 0-0 stalemate in regulation and extra time.
It was the perfect start to this year’s competition with a first place prize of 7 million Guyana dollars on offer.
The Defending champs looked very composed in the first half of their match against a timid Buxton United side in the first half where two of their 3 goals were realized, Gideon Payne netting a double in the 7th and 51st minute. Defender Sherman David scored the other on the stroke of halftime from the penalty spot.
While the Tigers were dominant in the first half easing to a 2-0 cushion and further increasing the lead early in the second, the young Buxtonian side never let up and kept on battling much to the enjoyment of their supporters.
Their most prolific scorer Clive Andries, a multi talented sportsman who also represented Guyana in Cricket, pulled one back in the 57th minute during a period when the East Coast side were very dominant with the Tigers sitting back deep in the defensive third.
The game was put in a total spin for the defending champions in the 63rd minute when Orson Washington netted the second goal for Buxton.
With Buxton keeping up the pressure the equalizer almost materialised with the entire Western Tigers side on the back foot.
They {Western Tigers}were able to hold on to their slim lead until full time but will need to work on some areas of shortcoming having already booked their place in the quarterfinals against the winner of the Sunburst Campton / Liquid Gold encounter.
The Bartica based Liquid Gold registered the first upset of the tournament with a hard fought 4-3 penalty kicks win over Riddim Squad.
Regulation and extra time failed to separate the two sides in a match that saw both sides throwing away many opportunities, Riddim Squad missing the most which eventually put paid to their hopes of advancing into the group-of-16-round; Liquid Gold will now face Sunburst Camptown on Tuesday December 21 at the GFC Ground.
The Bartica side from the start of the game signaled their intention that they meant business by finding an early rhythm as they took the attack to their City counterparts.
The first 25 minutes saw most of the play in Riddim Squad’s half with the fit Bartica side never showing any inclination to ease off the pace. The half ended with no goals being scored.
The second half saw Riddim Squad taking control of the game but finishing was their weakest area and they were very dismal in this department.
Chances were created but poor finishing was the order of the day. Eventually extra time was required and this too did not separate the two teams.
Penalty Kicks was the next step to determine the winner and this is where the Bartica side showed that they were more focused as they nailed 4 of their 5 chances with Riddim Squad missing twice in four to bow out of the competition in their first game.
Two more teams will walk the plank tomorrow when competition switches to the East Coast of Demerara at the Enmore Community Centre Ground.
Linden‘s Netrockers will challenge Bakewell Buxton Stars in the opening game at 18:00hrs with the main event between Fruta Conquerors and Victoria Kings.
The winner of both games will advance to the group-of-16 draw.
Saturday’s matches should have been played at the Uitvlugt Community Ground but will now be played at the GFC Ground.
Ann’s Grove United come up against Bakewell Topp XX in opening play with the main match up featuring Alpha United and Seawall F.C.
