Kaieteur News’ Devers is Cricket Journalist of the Year
Kaieteur News’ Sean Devers was named Cricket Journalist of the year while Corentyne Berbice Club Rose Hall Town emerged Club of the year for the 2nd consecutive year at the Guyana Cricket Board’s annual award ceremony at the Umana Yana last evening.
Rose Hall Town, one of the few clubs with a female cricket programme, also places emphasis on off the field activities to improve the social skills of their cricketers and contribute to community development in the Ancient County.
The Rose Hall Town acquired sponsorship for all of their teams and their performance on the field in Berbice cricket and produced three male players and a female in national teams this year. In their last competition they lost to Albion in the Berbice limited overs first division final.
Domestic Cricketer of the year Royston Crandon, Berbice Captain Assad Fudadin and Royston’s elder brother Esuan Crandon all played at the senior level this year while West Indies female player and Guyana’s female cricketer of the year Shamaine Campbell also plays for Rose Hall town. The Club also produced this year’s Guyana under-15 Skipper Shawn Perreira.
The Region 6 club also organized cricket competition at both youth and senior level in Berbice and contributed a Printer to the Berbice cricket board as a part of their ongoing contribution to cricket in Berbice.
In addition to reporting on local cricket, Devers covered all of Guyana matches in the 2010 Regional First-Class, Caribbean Cup T20 in Barbados and Trinidad and the Regional 50-overs competition in Jamaica.
Kaieteur News was the only West Indian media house in South Africa in September when Devers covered the Airtel Champions League T20 tournament.
A former Guyana off-spinner, Devers covered the 3-Test series in the West Indies against South Africa for the BBC World Service and was a part of the Line & Length and CMC Radio commentary teams for the ICC T20 World Cup, which he also covered for Kaieteur News.
Orin Bailey, Guyana’s trainer at the Champions League tournament, received a special award for his services rendered beyond the call of duty while Albert Smith and Michael ‘Hyles’ Franco received awards for their distinguished contribution towards the development of cricket coaching.
Digicel, Ansa McAl, DDL, and NBS all received Corporate Awards for their outstanding contribution to the development of cricket through sponsorship.
Devers, in his response on behalf of the awardees, thanked the GCB for recognizing and appreciating their efforts and urged those in the cricket fraternity to ‘think not what the cricket can do for them but what they can do for the cricket’ as they continue their service to the game in the new year.
