Twenty-year-old Alex Chattergoon, who was charged with murder, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, yesterday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that the accused, on October, 29, last, at Kumaka Waterfront, Moruca River, North West District, murdered Damion La Rose.
The defendant of Paradise, Essequibo Coast, was not required to plead, since the charge is indictable. However Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford requested that the matter be transferred to the Aquero Magistrate’s Court.
The Magistrate remanded Chattergoon and ordered him to make his next court appearance on January 11, 2011 at Aquero.
Also appearing before Magistrate Beharry were Venezuelan Yeanny Jose Rodrigues and Peruvian Jessica Ruby Donayre Espantoso, who were jointly charged with arriving in Guyana by sea and disembarked without the consent of an immigration officer.
It is alleged that on Sunday, last, the defendants at Springlands, Corentyne, Berbice, entered the country illegally by sea, without the permission of an Immigration Officer.
The defendants, who were unrepresented by an attorney-at-law, pleaded not guilty to the charge. Prosecutor Telford objected to bail on the grounds of the evidence against the defendants. He informed the court that the defendants are husband and wife and they entered Guyana illegally on December 12, last.
According to Telford, on December 13, last, the defendants were on the Essequibo Coast, where they were intercepted by police ranks on a mobile patrol.
The patrol questioned them about their presence in Guyana.
Telford said that the defendants were unable to relate to the police, since they do not speak English. As a consequence, the police took them to the Charity Police Station where they were charged.
The Magistrate refused bail and ordered the defendants to return to court on December 2, at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
