Former policeman, Antonio Singh Balrup, 23, of 5 Reliance Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, who was allegedly caught with 17 grams of marijuana at the home of a remand prisoner, and was remanded by magistrate Omeyana Hamilton at the Reliance Magistrate’s court after he pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, has been granted bail in the High Court.
Chief Justice Ian Chang granted bail to the policeman on a petition by attorney at law Mursalene Bacchus.
The ex-policeman was allegedly found in a house frequented by a known criminal who is currently on the run and another who is in custody after being arrested with a cache of high power weapons in Adelphi, Canje.
Balrup was allegedly arrested around noon on Friday December 3, by a party of police men at Adelphi Village, East Canje.
At the time of his arrest the policemen noticed a black bag which contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems of the marijuana plant.
Balrup’s national ID Card along with other articles belonging to him was allegedly found inside the bag. The prosecutor had asked that bail be refused due to the nature and gravity of the offence and that Balrup was no longer a serving member of the force.
Mr Bacchus in his petition stated that his client has been incarcerated since December 3, and that his client verily believes that he was not found in unlawful possession of any drugs.
Balrup had only graduated in 2009 from the Felix Austin Police College. His batch mate, Kellon Kingston, was jailed for being in possession of cocaine earlier this year.
Another batch mate, Kelvin Sheppard, was allegedly shot dead by his superior at Springlands.
Balrup’s younger brother, Vivian, was brutally murder at the Number 63 Beach just over a year ago.
His next trial date is fixed for December 29.
