The nation’s best amateur boxers are gearing up for the final tournament of the year, fittingly dubbed the ‘Champion of Champions’ since it will feature all of the champions from the various tournaments staged throughout the year.
The two night tournament is scheduled to get underway this Saturday and culminate one night later at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
Boxers from gyms located in Georgetown as well as the rural areas would want to wrap up their activities on a winning note hence the highly anticipated battles.
Among the entities vying for the top gym prize are the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles (HE), Republican Boxing Gym (REP), Ricola Boxing Gym (RIC) and the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG).
Boxers from the rural areas will continue to stake a claim for the many titles at stake and boxing buffs could look forward to intense battle from pugilists out of the North West Boxing gym, Timerhi Warriors, Central Boxing Gym (CBG) out of New Amsterdam and the Kwakwani gym among others.
Meanwhile, local referees and judges are expected to participate in a refresher course slated to get underway here early next month. According to a source within the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Mr. James Beckles, a Trinidadian and International Boxing Association (IABA) referee and judge, will arrive in Guyana early January to conduct an officials’ seminar which will encompass discussions on the finer art of refereeing and judging.
The GABA source intimated that at the end of the seminar local referee and judges would be better positioned to earn higher statuses in their respective fields.
Currently there are several referees/judges ranked as level one officials including lone female, Ramona Agard, Dexter Patterson, Carl Franklyn and Keith Campbell. The other local officials would aspire to earn a promotion one notch upward, from level one to two.
