Play in the Dr. Noel Blackman birthday knockout 7-a-side football tournament will kick off today at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground Bourda with a total eight matches starting at 5:00pm.
The tournament coordinated by Former national player and coach, Lennox Arthur, is in honour of the birth anniversary of another former footballer, Dr. Noel Blackman, who was also a Minister of Health during the People’s National Congress (PNC) led administration several years ago.
The winner will walk away with $100,000 and the runner-up $50,000 along with trophies. Thirty-two area and street teams have been invited to participate and the contests are expected to be keen.
Several of the leading area teams and players will be in action over four days of competition fixed for today December 16, Sunday 19, Wednesday 22 and Thursday 30 when the quarterfinals, semis and final will be contested.
The no offside rule will be in effect for this tournament.
Several exciting players from the various areas will be on show including Trevor Lewis of Lodge, Treon Lythcott of Meadow Brook, Richie Richards of Campbellville and Derville Stewart of Mocha.
Opening action today will see: Lodge vs Lima Dam, Laing Avenue vs Festival City, Campbellville vs Cummings Street, Grove vs Charlotte Street, Kitty vs Meadow Brook, Sophia vs North East La Penitence, Benn Street vs Tucville and West Estate vs Agricola.
The second set of matches on Sunday, December 19 to determine those advancing to the round of 16 fixed for December 22 will feature Leopold Street vs Vryheid’s Lust, Mocha vs Kuru Kururu, North Ruimveldt vs Yarrowkabra, West Back Road vs Timehri, Tiger Bay vs Den Amstel, Alexander Village vs Pouderoyen, Albouystown vs Uitvlugt and Broad Street vs Goed Fortuin.
