A 29-year-old man is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), after he was severely chopped across his body by a father and son.
Kamla Crawford aka “Sonny” or “Cat eye” of Number. 43 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was attacked by the two men, after he rendered assistance to the father.
According to Kamla’s relatives, they reported the matter to the Whim Police Station, but up to press time, the suspects were not apprehended nor have they received any response from the police.
Kamla’s father, Peter Crawford, told Kaieteur News that he was in the savannah, when his wife called him and told him about the tragedy, so he quickly came down to the hospital.
According to Mr. Crawford, the suspects (given names) are known to his family. He said that his son and the man rear cattle in the same area.
Crawford said that his two sons and the man and his son were in the backdam, when the father asked Kamla to help him across a trench by boat, since he cannot swim.
Crawford said that Kamla helped the man across the trench. He added that the man’s son was already on the other side of the trench. He further stated that the suspect’s son came up behind Kamla and dealt him several blows to the head with a piece of wood.
Crawford said that Kamla fell to the ground and the men started chopping him with cutlasses. Crawford noted that when his younger son tried to assist his brother, he too was set upon and he sustained injuries.
Crawford related that public-spirited persons, who were travelling in a minibus, interceded and stopped the men from attacking his sons.
Crawford stated that the men made good their escape by foot into the backdam. The helpful citizens brought his sons down to the hospital. He added that his younger son was treated and sent away.
Crawford added that his family and the men had no previous confrontations.
Kamla’s family stated that they fear that no justice will prevail, since they are contending that the suspect and his family have “police contacts.”
One relative contended that the suspect was recently involved in an unlawful act, where he was found with an unlicensed gun, but he was never charged of the offence.
Kaieteur News made numerous attempts to contact the Whim Police Station via telephone, but that proved futile, since the phones were occupied.
