Campbell takes Female Cricketer award
By Sean Devers
Fast improving 25-year-old leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo was named Guyana’s Cricketer of the year while 18-year-old all-rounder Shamaine Campbell collected the Female Cricketer of the year award last evening at the Guyana Cricket Board’s annual award ceremony at the Umana Yana in Georgetown.
National under-19 leg-spinner Amir Khan took home the Guyana Junior Cricketer of the year award. Khan won the TCL under-19 bowler of the year while left-hander Kwame Crosse copped the TCL under-19 batsman of the year award. Sherwin McPherson copped the Best fielder award in the TCL tournament.
National middle-order batman Royston Crandon received the Domestic Cricketer-of-the-Year (Rohan Kanhai trophy) while West Indies High Performance Centre’s (HPC) opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika collected the Most Improved Player award (Lance Gibbs trophy), with Brandon Bess, Sabrina Munroe and June Ogle Thomas being honoured for making their respective West Indies debuts during 2010.
All members of the Guyana T20 team which won the Caribbean Cup in August this year were presented with medallions. Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan was the recipient of a plaque for his astute captaincy, while 20-year-old Jonathon Foo won a special award for his batting in the CT20 tournament in Barbados and Trinidad.
The Berbician Bishoo who plays for Albion in local cricket put together a string of good performances for Guyana this year and was rewarded with selection to the West Indies ‘A’ team for their 50-over home series against Pakistan ‘A’. He also received the senior Regional Cricketer of the year award and collected the Clive Lloyd trophy.
Surprisingly not selected for the ‘A’ team Test series despite taking 71 wickets from 18 First-Class matches since his 5-29 on debut against Combined Colleges and Campuses at Providence two years ago, Bishoo has 25 wickets from 10 List ‘A’ games (including 7 from 3 West Indies ‘A’ team matches) and 16 from 9 T20 matches.
After returning figures of 3-37, 4-35 & 0-21 in the 3 ‘A’ team ODIs, Bishoo, one of the fittest players in the Region was not selected for the West Indies ODIs squad for their tour to Sri Lanka but helped Berbice to the Carib/Pepsi Guyana T20 title with a 3 wicket haul against the Rest team in the final.
Bishoo began the year by taking 24 wickets including 2 five-wicket hauls and was Guyana’s leading wicket taker in their disappointing performance as a team in the Regional First-Class competition before taking 10 wickets and the Man-of-the Series Award to help Guyana win the inaugural Caribbean Cup T20 tournament to qualify for the Champions League in South Africa.
His level-headedness with a push to cover for 2 to give Guyana victory with a ball to spare in the tense and pulsating final against Barbados in Trinidad was also a crucial contribution as Guyana qualified for South Africa.
In the cold, high altitude conditions in South Africa, Bishoo was again impressive even as Guyana struggled and his 3 wicket haul against the Powerful Mumbai Indians included the great Sachin Tendulkar stumped.
Back in the Caribbean, Guyana again struggled in the Regional 50-over competition but Bishoo was again among the wickets and only Barbadian Ryan Hinds, who played two more matches than he, had more than his 10 scalps to end an outstanding 2010.
A member of the 2011 Guyana T20 squad Bishoo was easily the best performer in the ‘Beep test’ and reached level 13.3 without breaking a sweat. His commitment to training on his own and his dedication towards improving his bowling plus his results on the field made Bishoo an easy choice ahead of his Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan, Guyana’s other successful contributor in 2010.
Campbell, also a Berbician who plays for Club of the year Rose Hall Town, has played 11 ODIs for the West Indies female team since making her debut in October last year against South Africa.
The versatile right-hander who also wicket keep and bowl leg-spin, is one of four Guyanese in the West Indies female team to tour India next month and recently returned from South Africa with the successful region’s female side.
Campbell who was denied the opportunity of play at the inter-county or regional under-19 level this year due to an absence of such competitions, has also played 11 T20 matches for the West Indies female team including games in the last ICC T20 World Cup hosted by the West Indies.
Campbell scored a wonderful unbeaten 100 against St Lucia in this year’s Senior Regional female 50-over competition in St Vincent in the 5th place play-off and captured the Player of the Series award after making 166 runs at an average of 83 and taking eight wickets at an average of 10.75 per wicket in four matches
The 17-year-old Khan, who hails from Enmore but play for city side Everest, was Guyana’s leading wicket taker in this year’s Regional under-19 three-day competition in St Lucia with 27 scalps including 8-70 in 3 five-wicket hauls and was also outstanding in the GTM three-day Inter-county under-19 competition for Demerara.
The talented Khan also made his senior Inter County debut this year.
The 18-year-old Crosse, a compact batsman who hails from Kitty and plays for city side Malteenoes, topped the overall batting averages (Ave 65) and scored 195 runs from 4 matches with 2 fifties before prematurely leaving the competition with a damaged finger.
The 27-year-old Royston Crandon, who played his solitary ODI for the West Indies in South Africa last year, enjoyed a good year at the club level and scored a century against the Rest team in the GCB 4-day competition before helping Berbice retain their T20 title.
