Omashankar Parmanand of Gangaram, East Canje Berbice, driver of motor lorry GMM 5087 was fined $15,000 on a charge of dangerous driving when he appeared before Magistrate Omeyana Hamilton at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty.
The man had driven his truck across the road in the path of ‘B’ division Commander Assistant Commissioner Steven Merai’s vehicle, forcing the officer’s driver to take evasive action so as to avoid a collision.
Prosecutor corporal Roberto Figueira told the court that on December 4, last, around 08:00hrs on the No.2 Public Road, the Commander was proceeding on the Northern carriageway in the force’s motor car, PKK 885, driven by Corporal Grant. The motor lorry was parked ahead on the said northern side of the road.
As the commander’s vehicle was about to pass, the lorry was suddenly driven across the road from North to South forcing the commander’s driver to swerve to avoid a collision.
The driver, Omashankar Parmanand, was arrested, taken into custody and subsequently charged.
