… but pensioners foil them
A pensioner and his wife who foiled an attempted robbery at their home in Wajid Ali Street, Diamond East Bank Demerara yesterday, are furious at what they describe as a lackadaisical response on the part of members of the police force.
According to the pensioner, he was awakened at 1:30 hours on Monday by a splintering sound, and upon reaching downstairs he saw that the louvers from his window were removed and a car-jack was used to pry open the grill to gain access into the house. However, this was thwarted since it appeared as if the bandits noticed him.
He said then his 62-year-old wife made several calls to the Providence Police Station, and was told that no patrol was available.
“I was calling since 1:30 to 5:30 this morning, I call Eve Leary and they give us a number to call and nobody ain’t coming. I even call Brickdam.” The pensioner’s wife said.
They both disclosed that a policeman then visited their residence at 8:30a.m and told them that they should visit the police station.
“No fingerprints were taken, no statement, nothing. When I first get through to the station the police ask me how old I was. What that has to do with anything?”
The man noted that if the police had responded promptly, they could have caught the bandits since on the veranda had boot prints as if to suggest that the bandit was awaiting the opening of the door.
“The obvious thing for people to do is run outside and check what is happening, or to call for help. A while after awaiting the police we still hear a sound, when we check again the grill was opened further. The police could have caught them if they responded in time.”
The pensioners said that they have been living in the area for 40-years and this is the first occasion that a beak-in had happened. “Now if I want to apply for a gun will they give me?”
“I noticed a known taxi earlier before this happened in the area, and about 3/4 hour after I see the same car after they tried coming in the house. I see the car circle the area again and go out,” the woman said.
The pensioners are contending that the police force should use some of those vehicles given to them by the Government to patrol at nights and not make excuses that there are no patrols.
