Dear Editor,
I congratulate your newspapers for continually featuring people who have made a mark in Guyana and in some cases outside of Guyana in their respective fields and indeed, praise is due to Mr. (Jeremiah) Mohabir for his dedication in the field of teaching.
However, there is a remark apparently made by him and quoted in the article in which he was reported to have said words to the effect that he would not sell his soul for silver, apparently in response to a Swami from Cove and John advising him that he would have to convert to Hinduism to teach there.
I just want to remind Pastor Mohabir that it is more likely that it is his ancestors if not him, who could be considered to have first sold their souls for silver by converting to Christianity during the period of British colonial rule, when it is a well known fact that people could not get certain jobs if they were not Christians.
