Thirty-year-old Noorjehan Ali, who appeared in court yesterday to answer to a charge of neglect of child, was granted $75,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, yesterday.
The accused, who resides at 30 Albouys Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, pleaded guilty to the charge, which alleged that between February 7 and December 10, 2010, she neglected her child, causing the minor unnecessary suffering.
The defendant was unrepresented by an attorney- at- law. However, Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the child is Ali’s son. He said that the child is currently in a child care centre manned by the Human Services Ministry.
Telford said that during the period, the child escaped from the centre and went to the home of the accused. Telford stated that the woman would instruct her son to “beg” for money on the streets.
He said that Ali would use the money collected by her son, as a form of support for her family.
Telford related that the child was apprehended by police ranks, after he was found wandering on the streets. He said that an investigation was carried out and subsequently the defendant was charged of the offence.
Telford requested that the Magistrate impose a custodial sentence on the defendant, so as to send a “message” to parents and guardians, who have the responsibility of taking care of a child or children.
However, the Magistrate granted bail and indicated that she has to receive a probation report before she gives a sentencing. The matter has been adjourned until December 16.
