…parents rent homes for school children
The main road leading to the Santa Rosa Secondary School in the Kumaka District, Region One has become increasingly deplorable over the last few months due to the inclement weather.
That situation has since forced a number of students to either stay away from school or to traverse by boat daily.
Parents are currently forced to rent houses especially for children at the Kumaka district, since some students are refusing to utilise the dormitory which was constructed to accommodate children especially from the far flung areas.
One of the students, Annalise Nelson, a 16-year-old fourth former of the Santa Rosa Secondary School said that because of the current deplorable state of the mud road she was forced to move to Kumaka.
This move, she said, will afford her enough time to reach to school.
This student said as a norm she would wake up as early as 4:00 each morning. “The weather is extremely bad in Waramuri. The road is in a terrible state and the bus is stuck many times causing us to panic most of the time.”
The 16-year-old added that many of her colleagues are apprehensive of plying the road due to the desolateness and bushy area. Her parents, she said, were forced to rent a house in Kumaka some six miles from Santa Rosa in order to guarantee her regular attendance to school.
Another student, Corretta Thomas, said that she has acquired temporary relocation to Kumaka since the deplorable state of the road. Other students from the Hymara area have also moved to Kumaka. The remote Amerindian community of Waramuri is located ten miles from Santa Rosa Secondary School.
A regional administration official said that maintenance works on the road are scheduled to begin next year.
