Sarwan’s fitness continue to improve – Seeram
By Sean Devers
Guyana begin the defence of Regional T20 cricket title against Jamaica from the 10th of next month in Antigua and yesterday the 21 members of the 22-man training squad commenced preparations for the 2011 Caribbean Cup with a fitness session at the Guyana National Stadium.
Missing from the training squad was experienced West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul who according to Coach Ravindra Seeram was suffering from jet lag after arriving in Guyana on Sunday night after a long flight from Sri Lanka.
The former Guyana and West Indies Captain, who did not play in this year’s Caribbean Cup which Guyana won or in the Champions League in South Africa, is expected to join the training squad today for another fitness session at the Stadium and a gym work out this afternoon.
National under-19 players Amir Khan was involved in yesterday’s training session while teenage pacer Rensford Beaton, who along with Khan was invited to participate in the team’s practice and training seasons, arrived in the City yesterday afternoon after reportedly encountering some ‘time-off’ problems in Essequibo.
Both Carl Moore and Coach Ravindra Seeram have retained their respective positions for the first regional tournament in 2011. The 49-year-old Seeram, who scored three centuries and averaged 35.04 from 41 matches at the First-Class level as a stylish middle order batsman, said while the players still have a lot of work to do, he was satisfied with the fitness level of most of the players on the first day of training.
“We had a good session today and the overall level of fitness is not too bad. We will have another session tomorrow (today) while we will have our first practice session on Wednesday here at the Stadium,” Seeram informed.
Seeram said that the fitness level of 30-year-old Ramnaresh Sarwan continues to improve since the last Caribbean Cup adding that the Guyana Captain, not selected for the West Indies tour to Sri Lanka due to a lack of fitness, had better times on the ‘beep test’ and 40-meter sprints than other senior players in the side and seemed fully committed to the hard work the team was putting in as they aim to once again qualify for the Champions League next year in India.
All-rounder Lennox Cush, who was not selected after missing the Guyana Cricket Board Carib/Pepsi T20 competition and the injured Paul Wintz are the only players from the Guyana 15-man squad which participated in the Champions League in South Africa last September who are not in the 22-man training squad.
Seeram disclosed that the 14-man Guyana touring squad will be selected after a second fitness test sometime next week and the squad will break camp on December 23 for the Christmas holidays.
The Guyana team, which has won two of the three Regional T20 tournaments played so far, is expected to play a couple of practice matches in Trinidad before next year’s Caribbean Cup which runs from January 10-23 in Antigua and Barbados.
