Keith McLean, 62, a GEB security guard for the past four years was shot in the left thigh while trying to defend his colleague who was relieved of a .38 revolver at the company’s new office at Providence, East Bank Demerara yesterday.
He reported that three men exited a yellow car and approached the driver of the GEB minibus that had stopped in front of the company’s Providence office.
The bus had reportedly collected a sum of money from a Guyoil facility on East Bank Demerara.
This gunman proceeded to relieve the guard of his .38 revolver. During this, Keith McLean who was the commander of the vehicle tried to prevent the robbery and was shot once in his left leg. He did not get a chance to return fire.
There were other security guards in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Two were armed with shotguns and the driver and Keith McLean were armed with .38 pistols. However, they failed to assist in the situation.
An eyewitness said that the Canine Supervisor who was in plainclothes had gone to a nearby shop. She was returning to the head office when she saw the attack.
She screamed and this distracted the gunmen who panicked and discharged a round hitting McLean in the leg. They then escaped.
The injured GEB guard was then rushed down to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted.
Also hospitalised is the canine supervisor whose blood pressure is now very high.
When this newspaper visited the GEB office in Providence, officials refused to comment on the incident.
Late last evening three of the GEB security guards had been taken to the Providence Police Station for questioning.
They were supposed to have taken the money they collected to the nearest bank. They reportedly chose to go back to the GEB headquarters where they parked on the roadway instead of entering the compound.
