Dear Editor,
I am very pleased to read about ‘Teacher Mohabir’ as a Special Person. Congratulations, Sir.
I was one of his many pupils he may not remember, but this letter here may refresh his memory.
The article made no mention of the one appointment I most remembered.
From Helena Canadian Mission (CM) School, he was appointed to Unity Village Primary School.
He was very keen on Cricket.
He arranged a match between Helena CM and Unity Village to be played at Unity (by the turn). I was the Captain of the Helena side. It was a Friday afternoon fixture.
I arrived there on time and went upstairs to let him know that ‘we’ had arrived, he was very pleased and wanted to know who and who were in the team, etc.
The classes were still on. To my amazement he stopped all the classes and introduced me to everyone, then asked me to make a speech.
It was my only regret as a cricket Captain, as I didn’t bargain for that (talking about belly ache, Nara!).
Anyhow the game started on time, we batted first.
Our main opening batsman, Lynch, was the first to get out LBW.
He was very upset, strolled off, picked up his bicycle and went home with our best cricket bat (we only had 2).
We had to borrow one from the opposition to finish the inning. Our team had to field with 10 but ended up winning the game.
We were all excited with the result, so much so that I left the celebration early to be the first person to break the news to our Headmaster, Mr. Matadin Raghu, at Helena, Mahaica.
Not knowing another setback was awaiting me.
As soon as I reached Teacher Raghu, breathless, and gave him the great news, his first reaction was “have you done your homework?”
All my excitement and smiles disappeared, as homework was the last thing that ever entered my mind when I walked out of the school yard.
I very much enjoyed my time at Helena with teachers such as Teacher Raghu, Teacher Mohabir, Teacher Durga, Teachers Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Kowlessar, and newcomer Teacher Sohan.
Years later I visited Unity to meet Chander (Shivnarine Chanderpaul) and found out that in the same cricket match, Chander’s Dad and his Dad’s brother (wicket keeper) played in the match.
To Teacher Mohabir:
Just to let you know that I excelled in Cricket in London over the years and played for and against top Clubs.
I am now a qualified cricket Umpire and Coach, and I still love cricket.
Yours and Teacher Durga’s effort weren’t in vain and I say this on behalf of all the cricket pupils at Helena.
I hope to meet you the next time I am in Guyana. Have an enjoyable retirement.
