Yarrowkabra gunpoint robbery…
Magistrate Sueanna Lovell on Friday remanded taxi driver Fidel Collins and Keron Fanfare to prison after they were charged with robbing two Chinese Nationals at gunpoint.
The two appeared in the Providence Magistrate’s Court on charges of robbery under arms.
It is alleged that on December 7, last, at Yarrowkabra on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, both Collins and Fanfare were armed with guns when they robbed a Chinese couple of a shoulder bag which contained approximately $769,200, a pair of sunglasses valued at $10,000, and a Chinese passport.
Fidel Collins told the court that he is 28 years of age and resides at Lot 627 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown. He explained that he is a taxi driver, who is involved in a common-law relationship with two children and “one on the way”.
When Magistrate Lovell questioned Collins to ascertain if he was ever charged with committing offence(s) before, Collins stated that he was charged once, for committing robbery under arms, but the matter was dismissed.
Keron Fanfare, 21, resides at Croal and Cummings Street.
He told the court that he is a dispatcher at a taxi service and was not charged for any offence previously.
Prosecutor Corporal Gordon Mansfield objected to bail. He said that Collins is presently engaged in a matter at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court pertaining to having committed robbery under arms and that the matter is still pending.
Mansfield told the court that if the two defendants are released on bail, it is not certain that they will not commit more offences elsewhere.
He told the Magistrate that the pair of sunglasses and approximately $150,000 cash was recovered in a car driven by the taxi driver, Collins, during a road-block which the police had put up soon after the robbery had occurred.
Magistrate Lovell refused bail for the defendants and ordered that they make their next court appearance on January 10, 2011.
