With the festive season in full swing, a number of persons and businessmen are busy with Christmas preparations and activities which consist of bringing good cheer to the needy.
Giftland Office Max was no exception as the company hosted a treat for the residents of Rosemary Lane (Tiger Bay), Georgetown, yesterday, catering for over 200 persons, both young and old.
A little boy eagerly approaches Santa to collect his gift and snack-pack after being “a good kid this year”.
Several families received food hampers containing rice, flour, sugar, salt, milk, peas, Ramen soup and biscuits valued at $15,000 each, while the largest family in the area received a hamper, which is said to be worth $25,000, that contained oil, rice, flour, milk, cookies, sugar, cubes, peas, sweets, butter, salt, Ramen soup, canned peas and juices.
Hampers were also given to senior citizens in the area.
Staff from the business entity visited approximately 144 homes and some 221 children.
The company provided their own Santa Claus to distribute gifts and snacks to the children. Refreshments included juices that were provided by the Escape Café.
According to Human Resource Manager of Giftland Office Max, Jade Beepat, this event was part of the company’s way of showing appreciation to customers and friends as well as part of “goodwill” during the Christmas season.
She stated that earlier in the year, her company did a similar event.
Beepat explained that though the company does other humanitarian work, this is the first year they have “really reached out to the community”.
Marketing Manager Compton Babb said that a box was placed outside of the company with a notice that explained that persons who were willing to make financial and other contributions were free to do so and these would be distributed to the residents of the Tiger Bay area.
He also explained that Giftland usually “gives back” to the public in various forms, mainly through sponsorship for sports such as football, basketball, and cricket, and also for concerts.
Babb stated that this is the second time for the year that Giftland Office Max has reached out to citizens in the surrounding area (Tiger Bay) and the company looks forward to ensuring that their Christmas every year is a bright and beautiful one.
Other company staff who were involved in the event were Renella Glasglow and Keshia Trotman while a community worker, Tresceline Rossan, played her part in assisting the employees so that the activity could be run smoothly.
Items that children received as gifts included story books, water guns, Barbie dolls and kitchen cooking sets. The event was held at the West-End Youth Community Centre and had a special guest appearance by soca artist, “Big Red”.
