Ranks from the Brickdam Police Station rushed to the scene to foil attempts by a young man to take his own life at his mother’s Lot 207 Charlotte and Alexander Streets home early Saturday morning. Despite their best efforts, the man who had earlier slashed himself on his arm, beat a hasty retreat and eluded more than half a dozen law enforcement officers.
The incident occurred at around 04:00hrs while June Sutherland was preparing to leave for work. The woman explained that her son Mark Anthony Marques has moved out of her home some time ago. She said that he visits sporadically and most times he is under the influence of alcohol. She said that yesterday morning was no different, only this time Marques became verbally abusive to her after she was forced to reprimand him. “He come home and after I notice how he drunk I tell he to go and lie down and ketch heself,” the woman explained. She said that instead of heeding her advice the young man became very abusive. “He start telling me how I living in old house and all kinds of things,” Ms Sutherland continued.
She said that she and her son traded remarks and then suddenly he picked up a knife and slashed himself on his left arm. “I started to scream and the neighbours called the police,” said the distraught mother.
A carload of policemen arrived on the scene and attempted to apprehend Marques but he proved to be very elusive. In the interim he had wrapped a piece of cloth around the wound even as the walkway leading up to the front door remained splattered in blood, evidence of the failed suicide attempt. One of the officers had taken possession of the knife while the others attempted to sidle up and cajole the young man into the waiting police vehicle. Just when it appeared as if they would have succeeded in their mission, the young man swiftly moved out of their reach. Another vanload of officers drove up shortly afterwards but their presence forced Marques to move further up South Road. He eventually joined a minibus and disappeared leaving the team of baffled officers contemplating their next move.
Meanwhile, Marques’ mother attributed his wayward behaviour to the loss of his father a few years ago. She said that her son’s father was employed with a popular construction firm up to the time of his death. She also said that it was while attending to his job at Yarowkabra, Linden Soesdyke Highway that the senior Marques was struck down by a speeding vehicle. “Is soon after that Mark start behaving like that,” she explained. “I ain’t able no more, I talk till I sick and it’s not making sense”.
She remains adamant that she did not evict her son and is willing to take him back. In the meantime, the young man remains on the loose.
