Dear Editor,
I noticed this amazing letter (Kaieteur News, 11-12-10), from one Ray Chickrie and if what he says is true, here are some of the things happening in Suriname:
* Cheng International and China Harbour are financing the execution of mega projects totaling US$6 billion.
* Sheikh Khaled Ahmed Moosa of CEO Spirito Investment Ltd, a Dubai, and United Arab Emirates-based investment company is seeking investment in the oil, timber, gold and housing sectors of Suriname.
* India last month offered Suriname a credit of US$500 million to be repaid after 15 years for infrastructure works.
* The tourists are increasing in numbers to Suriname.
* Marriot and Best Western have entered the Surinamese market and Wydham International will soon open a hotel, shopping centre and health club in downtown Paramaribo.
* Local franchise, Torarica Hotels, opened another hotel, the Royal Torarica a few years ago.
* The Turks are also investing in the hotel industry there.
Tourists bring Euros from Cayenne, Amsterdam, Brussels and Germany. Tourists enjoy the law and order in the streets of Paramaribo and can be seen riding bikes across the country.
Can anyone in the Guyana Government put together a similar list of potential or real investments in Guyana? This is where President Jagdeo and his troops have failed Guyana. There is no foreign investment and there is none planned. CGX with US$20 million is a joke.
The late President, Desmond Hoyte in his last years was able to get Barama and GT&T to invest in Guyana and since then there has been nearly no other foreign investments. The country cannot grow and develop if we continue to depend on rice, sugar and bauxite, as very little new land is put into cultivation. Thank God for the increased gold prices in the last few years.
But back to the point – can someone in the Guyana Government provide a list of actual or projected foreign investments in Guyana?
J. Smith
