Out of favor West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan briefly set the Guyana National Stadium on fire in murky conditions last night with a pugnacious unbeaten 64 before rain condemned their 3rd place play-off to a no result.
The two teams had to settle for the last position since defending champions Berbice and the Rest Team contested the final when the heavy shower, which washed out the evening’s first game, eventually subsided.
Chris Barnwell (14) was taken at mid-off trying to go over the top off former National pacer Rayon Thomas at 20-1 in the game which was reduced to 19-overs per side due to a late start caused by wet ground conditions.
A handful of fans watched under overcast skies as Skipper Sarwan, who recently returned from the USA after missing the preliminary rounds of the competition played an array of audacious shots on the heavy outfield in his unbeaten 64 from just 31 balls decorated with 4 fours and three sixes.
The fit looking Sarwan dominated a 100-run 2nd wicket partnership with opener Travis Dowlin who was bowled for a 29-ball 39 by left-arm spinner Robert Moore in an over in which Sarwan took 15 from the first 4 balls.
Leon Johnson was unbeaten on zero when the skies again opened up and the match was eventually called off with Demerara on 129-2 off 12. 3 overs.
Last night’s final began at 21:00hrs and details of that game will be published in tomorrow’s edition.
