‘Saltfish gang’ captured and beaten at Parika

Last evening, four members of the infamous ‘Saltfish gang’ that has reportedly been targeting heavy-duty vehicles around the country were caught.
Reports are that the four men, ranging in age from 16 to 62, were caught by police and residents at Parika during their attempt to strip a truck in the community.
This newspaper understands that over the past few weeks, police on the West Coast of Demerara and the East Bank of Essequibo had been receiving reports that persons were losing parts from their trucks and tractors.
Some two weeks ago, a businessman who lives at St. Lawrence, Parika, lost some parts from his heavy-duty vehicle, which was parked at a location in the area.
Also, a man from Crane was awakened a few nights ago after hearing loud noise in front of his home.
Upon looking out the man saw a silver grey wagon speeding away from his parked truck.
It was later determined that the person or persons in the wagon were attempting to remove parts from the truck.
However, last night from all indications, the four gang members ran out of luck when they attempted to do the same thing in Parika. This newspaper was told that two of the men were seen “operating suspiciously” around a parked truck in the vicinity of the Parika Market.
An alarm was raised and the men were cornered and severely beaten by residents.
According to reports, the two men were dropped off at the location by a silver grey wagon and then headed to Parika Old Road.
This information was passed on to the police who headed in the same direction.
However when the two men in the wagon were caught they were not aware that their accomplices were already in police custody.
According to reports out of the area, the two men who were caught and subsequently handed over to police had to be taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital for treatment.
It is understood that one had to be sent for further attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
He was treated and subsequently released back into police custody.
Earlier in the year, several persons were arrested and placed before the court on allegations of theft of millions of dollars worth in heavy-duty vehicle parts. The suspects were believed to be linked to a gang operating out of Annandale, East Coast Demerara.
