UG students are being made ‘scapegoats’ for admin.’s political agenda

Dear Editor,
As a past student of the University of Guyana (UG), I have closely followed the institution throughout the years and I must say that I am disappointed in the institution. The level of quality assurance at the University of Guyana is simply not at the standard it should be, in order to become recognised, accepted and accredited. I must also, emphasise my concern for student’s welfare, since poor administration of this university has created an environment where students, the primary concern of any university, are disregarded, and their needs are not being diligently addressed.
I was stupendously knocked for six when I discovered that the university, on top of all its student woes, is arrogantly floating heads up, on a $373 million deficit that it cannot resolve, when top ranking members flambouyantly travel to here, there and everywhere at UG’s expense.
In any coherent frame of thinking, can any of UG’s top ranking administration honestly look to UG students in the face and tell them that this is a good administration? How can this possibly be a good administration, when hardworking, dedicated students spend their days worrying whether or not they will be allowed to write exams for which they spent the last three months (the entire semester) preparing for, because a top ranking UG administrator brazenly disregarded university statutes and insisted on an increased tuition in this hard guava season, for courses that have to date, still not been approved by the University Council? Priority-mail this to Mars and back, and even aliens will tell you that this could never be a good administration.
Why are these students being made scapegoats for the political agenda of the administrative arm of the University of Guyana? When will these students realise that they are the greatest stakeholders in this university’s affairs and actually start giving a damn?! Until they do, UG will continue to ‘eye pass’ and shortchange them.
