…as NY group protests Presidential Candidate process
The process that the People’s National Congress Reform has adopted to identify a Presidential candidate has irked the party’s New York Group #1 and they have signaled their intentions to protest the move.
The group met yesterday to jettison the group’s nominees of four as against all the nominees on the regional priority list to be submitted by the secretariat.
According to the New York-based grouping, “this partisan action was done in the presence of, and active participation and involvement with two of the presidential candidates process committee (members).”
The committee’s mission was only to observe the process and the New York Group contends, “…and rightly so, that that decision taken by way of a motion, which our delegates vehemently opposed, is in complete violation of articles 2.12 and 2.13 of the systems and procedures approved by the central executive committee for use in the identification of the Presidential Candidate.”
The New York Group flayed the decision as tantamount to the denial of the facilitation of maximum inclusion of party members in the process for the nomination of the Presidential candidate.
The group stated that, “This partisan behaviour by a few to manipulate and subvert even this not perfect process, is troubling and highly reprehensible and if not rectified immediately can further disunite the party.”
The group said that in light of the circumstances they are contemplating swift and decisive actions, one of which is, and not limited to, temporarily suspending contacts on the issue with the Region until the matter is fully ventilated and amicably resolved.
“Therefore we urge all members to act on this matter before the situation deteriorates.”
On November 19, last, the Party’s General Secretary, Oscar Clarke, at a party press briefing, had outline the process by which the PNCR will by February next year elect a Presidential Candidate.
According to Clarke, by December 18, 2010, all Regional Secretaries must submit their Regional List of Nominees, endorsed by all of the Group delegates attending the Special Extended Regional Committee meeting, to the Party’s General Secretary (GS).
By December 22, the GS will prepare a National List of Nominees. All Nominees will be asked to formally notify the General Secretary, in writing, their acceptance of the nomination.
The Nominees that accept their Nomination will be required to submit Curriculum Vitae along with a brief biographical presentation to the Presidential Candidate Process Committee.
The Committee would then prepare a list of the Nominated Candidates for submission and approval of the Central Executive Committee.
By December 30, the PNCR would publicise the approved List of Nominees for the Party Presidential Candidate.
He said that between January 3 and January 31, 2011, as far as practicable, the Party will convene, at Regional venues, countrywide, Town Hall-style meetings, to be addressed by the nominees for the Party Presidential Candidate.
Finally by February 19, 2011 the party will convene a Special Congress, to elect the PNCR Presidential Candidate for the 2011 National Elections.
Among some of the nominations put forward for consideration are Dr Richard Van-West Charles, Robert Corbin, Retired Brigadier David Granger, Kads Khan, Dr. Faith Harding and Basil Williams.
