Dear Editor,
I read in the papers (09-12-10) of a very fantastic piece of equipment that could help to track boats and would allow fisher folk to become more secure.
I applaud these initiatives since the safety of fishermen (all Guyanese even) is every one’s business; the price of fish can be affected which can impact on all protein sources. This started me thinking.
There is a piece of equipment and a service provided by an American company called “Spot”. For US$99 per unit per year, you can press a button and send e-mail messages to preprogrammed address giving GPS location. This unit is as big as a Black Berry, rugged and battery power for one year if not activated.
Twenty units can be bought by the Government of Guyana and given, secretly to 20 boats. The units can be programmed to e-mail the ministry of Agriculture, Home affairs and the Guyana Defence Force.
When one of these boats is under attack the 911 button would be pressed. When this message is received a helicopter or airplane can be sent to track the pirates leading to their capture. This equipment is no stranger to Guyana, almost all aircraft pilots have one.
When we would have rid the seas of pirates these units can be used by GDF border Guards and expedition parties, by forestry surveying personnel and whenever it is envisaged that emergency services may be needed outside of cell range.
