Apart the march past of teams, the National under-20 side will collide with Linden U-23 combination in the opening game before the K&S All-Stars battle Alethico Roraima from Brazil in what should be a pulsating affair.
Bakewell is no stranger to local football. The Company has sponsored of the Bakewell top 20 team for over a decade and more recently they have also been sponsoring the Bakewell Buxton Football team. Both of their teams will be vying for supremacy in the 20-team tournament.
“Sports is an integral part of human development, especially amongst the youths and for the past 15 years, we have been associated with the Kashif and Shanghai tournament, while this is the third year we are giving school children across Guyana the opportunity to be a part of this tournament,” stated Nasir.
Baksh informed that sports play an integral role in youth development after collecting the tickets, adding that students from all over Guyana will be given the tickets to be at the Stadium on Sunday.
“I believe that sports should be promoted within the schools today, especially football which will be done in the same elaborate manner as cricket next year, since I have had this discussion with the National Sports Commission and hopefully, the Kashif and Shanghai Organization can come on board and assist with the organizing of same” said Minister Baksh.
The tournament, easily the best organized and biggest football competition in Guyana, began as small activity for the Christmas holidays in Linden 21 years ago and now involves the country’s top sides along with overseas teams.
Western Tigers defeated Alpha United in last year’s final at the Stadium and the 2010 tournament will again conclude with the Final at the Stadium on the first day of next year. It was disclosed yesterday that Children under 12 will be admitted free of charge for all of the matches. (Sean Devers)
