The Office of the Chancellor of the Judiciary yesterday issued a statement expressing “horror and dismay”, at certain statements made of and concerning the Chancellor, attributable to Attorney-at-Law Mr. Nigel Hughes, and which were reported by Kaieteur News on December 4th, 2010 under the caption, “Prosecutor Challenges Delay in Trial”.
Hughes, in the said report, had made mention that his client, C.N. Sharma, was fearful that the Chancellor would issue a directive to the presiding magistrate in favour of the President.
The release said that the statements as reported are completely false and baseless, are scandalous and were maliciously made. “They impute that his Honour, the acting Chancellor, is unfit to hold and discharge the responsibilities of his office and were calculated to cause substantial prejudice to the due administration of justice in Guyana and bring it into disrepute.”
According to the statement, the acting Chancellor is not averse to criticism or fair comment on the discharge of his constitutional duties but considers the statements of Mr. Hughes to be completely beyond the parameters of respect, fairness and propriety.
The release continued that “the statements attributable to Mr. Hughes, as reported in the Kaieteur News newspaper (which to date he has not refuted) represent not only disrespect and contempt for the office of the Chancellor of the Judiciary but also represents the basest form of insult to members of the magistracy of Guyana, whom his Honour has a duty to protect from such disparaging utterances.”
The statement submitted that “his Honour is consulting with his attorneys-at-law and will not shirk from his duty to take appropriate action to insulate and protect the administration of justice from such evil, reckless and malicious attack”.
