Despite grandiose plans to ensure the safety of citizens throughout the Christmas holidays, bandits continue to make a mockery of the police in certain parts of the country.
While police in Georgetown and its environs were hard pressed to stem the flow of robberies earlier this week, the bandits appeared to have shifted their operations to the East and West Coasts of Demerara, striking twice on Wednesday night.
In both instances they assaulted their victims who were forced to seek medical attention for their injuries.
First they struck at Best Village on the West Coast when three men attacked businesswoman Pulmattie Ramkisson at about 20:30 hours.
The bandits, according to reports, entered Ramkissoon’s house through an open door while she was doing some cleaning.
They held her up, along with two other occupants, and took away a quantity of jewellery valued at $1million and four cellular phones, after which they escaped.
Ramkissoon, who was struck to the head during the incident, was treated at the West Demerara Regional Hospital and sent away.
And at about 21:45 hours, two men with handguns robbed Yang Xan, 35, of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.
Yang, who operates the Flower City Restaurant, was in the process of closing up the premises, when he was confronted by the two men who held him at gunpoint.
The men took away $150,000 from a drawer along with three laptop computers and a camera and escaped.
During the incident Yang Xan was also assaulted to the face and head by one of the men.
He was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for his injuries and sent away.
