Hopetown United and Tamarind Root of Hampshire on the Corentyne have become the first two teams to reach the semi-finals of the New Building Society Second Division 40-Overs Cricket Competition in Berbice.
In the quarter-finals played at the Hopetown Ground, Hopetown United beat Tain by 30 runs.
In the match, which was reduced to 35 overs because of rain, Hopetown United won the toss and batted first. After they lost their first wicket with only 3 runs on the board, Steffon Adams joined Jermain Reynolds and they put on 77 for the 2nd wicket before Reynolds fell for 33. Adams was joined by former Berbice wicket-keeper batsman Kwesi Mentore and they added 53 for the 3rd wicket after which Adams departed for 51 (6 fours and 1six) at 133 for 3. With Mentore going onto make 31, Emerson Benjamin 25 N.O and Kelwin Bennette 24, Hopetown United reached 211 for 8 in their 35 overs with Mahendra Baldeo taking 4-58.
When Tain began their response, they were given a start of 52 runs by Rudrunauth Lauchman and Poorendra Debidyal. After Debidyal fell for 26, Lauchman was joined by Imran Khan and they added 95 for the 2nd wicket to take the score to a commanding 147 for 1. However within the space of 3 runs, off-spinner Adams removed Lauchman for 68 (4 fours and 5 sixes) and Khan for 42 (3 fours and 1 six) to leave the score on 150-3.
Pacer Jermain Reynolds then took two quick wickets as Tain slipped to 158-5. Tain got some hope when Bejai Singh (31) and Chandrashekar Arjune put on 24 to take the score to 182 before Reynolds, who plays club cricket in the City, snatched 4 consecutive wickets to rip through the lower order as Tain were dismissed for 199 in 34.4 Overs. Reynolds ended with 6-30 from 6.4 overs and Adams 2-22.
In the other quarter-final played at No. 71, Tamarind Root beat No. 71 by 40 runs. In this match which was also reduced to 35 Overs-a-side
because of rain, Tamarind Root won the toss, took first strike and after getting a start of 97 runs from Alvin Ramdass (57) and Altaf Mohamed (38) and contributions of 26 from Lionel Seegobin and 21 N.O from Vijai Sukra, they posted a challenging 232 all out in 34 Overs. Bowling for No. 71, Nazim Mohamed took 3 for 27, Deomangal Deodhari 2 for 24, Mark Lionel 2 for 39 and Deoprakash Ramdat 2 for 44.
When No. 71 replied, they gave good chase with Deoprakash Ramdat slamming 62 (7 fours and 1 six), Nazim Mohamed 44 and Karmeshwar Ramjit 33 but with no other batsman getting past 6, they could only reach 192 all out in 31.4 Overs. Bowling for Tamarind root Dilip Ramgasammy took 3 for 30, Alvin Ramdass 2 for 34 and Satesh Dwarka 2 for 44.
