Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, has terminated the services of Godfrey Evans, the Overseer of the Ordnance-Fort Lands/ Number 38 Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and Mr Rawleston Eastman- a sluice attendant, both of Cumberland Village, East Canje in Berbice.
According to a telephone interview with Mustapha, Eastman failed to execute his duties on Monday at a sluice which is located at Victoria Street, Cumberland. The result caused extensive flooding in the area.
The flooding, according to the Chairman, has caused immense damages to livestock and farming activities in the area. He stated that the residents had complained about the matter. He said, too, that he tried on numerous occasions to get the overseer on his cell phone to give an explanation for the failure of the attendant, but Mr Evans did not answer his cell phone.
He then visited the area on Monday afternoon, after which an assessment of the situation was done and, according to the Chairman, both individuals were found guilty, after which they were dismissed on the spot.
Mustapha related that his RDC will have to assist residents in whatever way possible to recoup the losses caused by the flood. He further stated that his actions were in line and in keeping with the no- nonsense policy discussed about by the Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, about the effectiveness of the Ministry.
Meanwhile, Overseer of the #38 NDC, Mr Godfrey Evans, in a telephone interview, stated that he was wrongfully dismissed and said that he will challenge a letter he received yesterday which was signed by the Regional Executive Officer of Region Six, Mr Bhadesie Poonai.
The letter, he stated, was sent in relation to “matters regarding functions of the #38 NDC” and that his services of Overseer were no longer required.
Evans said that he made attempts to get the sluice attendant on Monday but this was in vain. He further stated that he is not to be blamed for the matter. He refuted the claim that he did not answer the Regional Chairman on his cell phone.
Evans questioned the legality of the dismissal by stating that only the Local Government Minister can do such a thing. He told this publication that he would be taking on the services of a lawyer shortly.
