Taxi Driver arson/suicide…
Chrisendat Phagwah, the 39-year-old taxi driver, of Second Street, East Canfield, East Canje, Berbice, who died last Friday when he reportedly set his mother-in-law’s residence at 363 Fort Ordnance New Scheme on fire, has been determined to have succumbed to smoke inhalation.
These are the findings of a post mortem examination conducted yesterday by Dr Vivekanand Bridgemohan at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
According to reports, Phagwah who was wanted for questioning by the police decided to end his life instead of surrendering to the lawmen. He was reportedly wanted for questioning in relation to a matter of fraudulent conversion, in which he allegedly drove away with the gas bottle belonging to a passenger. The man lived at both of the aforementioned residences.
When police closed in on him on Friday morning, last, he was at his mother-in-law’s residence.
According to an eyewitness, Phagwah came home hurriedly, parked his car and quickly hurried into the house. The police arrived some time around 08:30 hrs. They entered the yard and knocked on the door for awhile. Phagwah was subsequently seen in the house. He communicated with the police but refused to surrender.
The police decided to remove some louvre panes to gain entry and the man in turn threw kerosene in their direction forcing them to retreat. The cops summoned back up and made another attempt on the house, but Phagwah again throw kerosene at them.
He then lit a fire by the window, however, this was put out by the cops, who decided to summon the Fire Service.
Phagwah according to eyewitnesses then lit fires in the two bedrooms and the kitchen of the two-flat wood and concrete structure.
