A taxi driver who was charged for armed robbery last year is now in custody for allegedly robbing the occupants of a car at Yarrowkabra on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
But the 28-year-old driver is alleging that a passenger he picked up committed the heist in which a woman was allegedly shot.
Kaieteur News understands that the female passenger was attacked and robbed of $700,000 yesterday afternoon at Yarrowkabra, by the occupants of another vehicle.
Police subsequently apprehended the taxi driver at a roadblock near Grove, East Bank Demerara. Some $150,000 was reportedly found in the man’s car.
Police officials said that the driver has claimed that a passenger he picked up at the Soesdyke/Linden Highway carried out the attack and left some of the money in his vehicle.
According to the taxi driver, he met the passenger in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market yesterday morning. He alleged that the passenger said that he had to collect some money from someone, and asked the taxi driver to listen out for a call.
Later in the day he received the call from the same man, who requested that the driver pick him up near the Soesdyke/Linden junction.
He allegedly picked up the man there, and the passenger pointed out a car and told him to follow the vehicle.
The taxi driver claimed that he trailed the vehicle to Yarrowkabra. They then drove alongside the vehicle and the passenger informed the driver that the lugs on one of his rear wheels were slack.
He alleged that when the driver stopped, the passenger from his (taxi driver’s) car exited and snatched the man’s ignition keys, shot a female passenger who was in the vehicle, and relieved her of cash.
The taxi driver claimed that they then headed for Georgetown.
However, before reaching the capital city, the robber allegedly placed some money in his glove compartment and exited the vehicle. He then continued on his journey before being stopped at the roadblock.
Kaieteur News has confirmed that the same driver, along with another taxi driver, was charged in October 2009 for allegedly robbing a Bartica businessman.
The businessman was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by four men while sitting in a car, which was being driven by the taxi driver’s alleged accomplice.
The getaway vehicle was later found abandoned in Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, while the taxi driver who is now in custody was found lurking in the area.
When questioned by the police, the suspect said that the abandoned car belonged to him but that he was hijacked by gunmen and that he was trying to find his aunt to relate the matter.
