Against solid performances from national and Caribbean Under-13 Singles Champion, Chelsea Edghill, the Malteenoes Sports Club ambushed last weekend’s Cadet and Junior Championships, topping most of the categories in the national competition.
Brandon Baldie and Denzel Hopkinson (left) prepare to serve against Zane Humphrey and Nigel Bryan last night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in the Boys’ U-18 Doubles competition in the National Table Tennis Championships.
Beginning with the Boys’ Under-10 Singles, pre-game favourite, Jeremy Singh finished unbeaten in the round-robin playoffs against Khalid Gobin, Akeem Nestor and Miguel Wong. The round-robin format was used to judge the winners in all the groups.
Following Singh’s success, Kristie Lopes played her way to victory in the Girls’ U-10 Singles as she topped the final group that included Selena Jackman, Nevaeh Clarkston and Sanash Corlett before Jamaal Duff and Edghill won respective U-13 titles.
Jamaal Duff led the final group including Joseph Johnson, Kyle Edghill and Elishaba Johnson to win the Boys’ U-13 title while Edghill’s initial title came from victories against Jamaali Homer, Priscilla Greaves and Naveah Clarkson in the Girls U-13 group.
Denzil Duff, the older brother of Jamaal, continued to ensure that Malteenoes did not sweep all the titles when he clinched the U-15 Boys’ accolade from Malteenoes’, David Duncan, who had decent debut outing, finishing second in the group. Kevin Corbin and Samuel Fraser were third and fourth in the U-15 Boys’ competition.
Edghill won her second title in the U-15 Girls contest, leading a rout of Akeisia Nedd, Greaves and Olivia Weeks. Edghill and Homer then teamed up to dominate the U-13 Girls Doubles with Greaves and Clarkson finishing second in that contest. Edghill and Homer also won the Under-15 Girls’ Doubles with Greaves and Nedd placing second.
To continue the Malteenoes momentum, Kyle Edghill and Singh topped the U-13 Boys Doubles with Elishaba Johnson and Joseph Johnson finishing second. Shemar Britton and Ryan Narine were third with Joshua Lallbachan and Bryton Murray fourth.
Denzel Duff and Stephon Patoir won the U-15 Boys’ Doubles. Jamaal Duff and Sunil Logan finished second while Stephan Corlette and Kyle Edghill was third and fourth respectively before Nigel Bryan had a late scare in the U-18 Boys’ competition.
After beating Brandon Baldie and Denzel Duff, Bryan had to wait in the wings to hear if he had secured his title after United States-based, Brad Belle won 3-2 against the national player in one of the closest finishes of the round-robin final.
Edghill then won her third individual title in the U-18 Girls competition. She topped a group that included Adielle Rosheuvel, United States-based, Saskia Chung and Nedd. Edghill and Nedd had won the Doubles from Chung and Rosheuvel, who were second.
Denzel Hopkinson and Baldie snatched the Boys’ U-18 Doubles title from Zane Humphrey and Bryan while Kyle and Chelsea Edghill won the U-13 Mixed Doubles; Sachin Panday and Nedd won the U-15 Mixed Doubles and Chelsea and Brad Belle won in the U-18 category.
