Imam Sham Razak along with his wife Nazli, almost eleven years ago organized a charitable foundation which feeds the needy and provides assistance to persons with scholarships to become resourceful in their communities and respective family circles.
The couple migrated to Canada several years ago, but returns every year to host events of such nature.
The organisation has been providing meals for persons living in villages along the West Coast of Demerara, on a daily basis. And the most recent occasion has come as no surprise to villagers.
“There is nothing that pleases me more than to help my villagers in whatever way possible” said Mr. Razak.
Over 300 persons gathered recently at the Imam’s late father’s home at Cornelia Ida, and were served with boxes of food, hampers, and each given $1000.
Persons, who had assembled along the street to receive their hampers, related that they were very appreciative of what the Imam was doing for them.
Many individuals came from as far as Den Amstel and Leonora, several villages away.
“After seeing what the children in my community are going through, I decided to give every child an opportunity to have a sound education, and to better their lives as they become older,” he related.
“I feel privileged to be helping my brothers and sisters.”
The Imam stressed that his assistance is there for all to benefit.
“I never had problems with race and religion. I just love the idea of giving.”
He revealed that plans are already in the pipeline to subsidize a large number of students who will be writing the 2011 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams. One hundred children’s fees will be funded by the foundation.
