Rain was unable to stop or even dampen the spirits of the participants in the final ‘Day of Interaction’ conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission and the Regional Administration Region # 10 at the McKenzie Sports Club Ground.
The Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport was on hand to declare the activity open after remarks were made by the Regional Executive Officer, Mr. Henry Rodney and the Director of Sport, Mr. Neil Kumar. As those present listened, the Hon. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport highlighted the need for community participation in and organising of sports as an important ingredient in the development of community members with emphasis on the benefits interaction in a positive environment.
The community of Ituni received the first trophy of the day after being adjudged the best uniformed team in the march past, the Linden Flyers Cycle Club followed with two trophies being awarded for having the best banner on display and the largest contingent in the march past. The day’s first activity, Female softball cricket provided a lot of fun and excitement as teams displayed excellent sportsman ship and skill as they slipped and slid all during the games on the wet ground.
The Coomacka Female Cricket Team prevailed and defeated the Ituni female Team in a keenly contested final. Ituni scored 28 runs for 2 off of their 5 overs with Coomacka making 29 for 4 off 4overs and three balls.
The male softball competition was won by South Amelia’s Ward who scored 42 runs in 4 overs to defeat Central McKenzie who had posted 41 runs for 6 off of the allotted overs.
Other results were: The Kwakwani Football Team defeated Fire Constabulary by a 2 – nil margin to be presented with the winner’s trophy, Kwakwani was also triumphant at Domino where they defeated Ituni and Coomacka.
Stephen Barrow was forced to play with a high level of intensity and focus to defeat Warren Hacksaw in the table tennis final.
Circle Tennis, our very own game, provided a lot of excitement as with the wet conditions the players at times literally slid around the circle. In the final with each team facing 25 balls, Half Mile Wismar team made 62 runs which were enough for them to win since the Christianburg team could only muster 54 runs.
With all the competition completed the crowd was treated to a scintillating exhibition of boxing by members of the boxing gym in Linden.
Presentations of sports gears and trophies were also made to the circle tennis teams and the cycling club who was also celebrating their anniversary.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport /National Sports Commission donated several trophies for a road race which was planned as part of the activities.
Presentations were made by the Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Mr. Alfred King, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sport and Mr. Henry Rodney, Regional Executive Officer of Region 10.
