Dear Editor,
I am responding to “Support for Ramkarran, Harding, Ramjattan as President” (Kaieteur News, December 5). I agree with the writer, we need bold, new and better leadership to put Guyana back on the right track.
Guyana has been falling apart. Everyday in the papers I read about and observe the mayhem in our country. There is almost complete breakdown of law and order. Some people feel they can and do whatever they want without thinking of sanctions.
It appears there is no government or leadership to clamp down on this chaos or give us good governance.
To an impartial visitor, Guyana appears ungovernable. People are getting killed like flies with crime dominating the news.
Bandits are terrorizing people daily, stealing their hard earned money and no relief in sight. Corruption is endemic at every level of government operations – anything you need you must pay a bribe. Even some of the ‘big chaps’ are on the take.
A few individuals who are close with the ‘big boys’ running the country are living a good life at the expense of all others. The working class is shafted.
The sugar industry, for years the backbone of our economy, is collapsing hurting workers and their families.
Government is ineffective and seems helpless in addressing some of the issues confronting the population.
It does not take much to restore order in this country. We need strong leadership with a vision to retake the country from those who are ruining it and running it into the ground. We have had enough of those self-centered leaders thinking how to enrich themselves, friends and relatives. As the writer noted, we need effective leaders with integrity and honesty.
My preference is for Moses Nagamootoo and or Ralph Ramkarran as the next leaders of the PPP. These are men with a proven track record in parliament and in their professions with humble working class origins and strong family ties.
They fought for the poor and the working class and have done the most for the nation among those within the PPP seeking the Presidency.
They are educated and competent and are western oriented in their economic and political outlook. Looking at the pack of potential Presidential contenders, with Winston Murray gone, they are my choice to rescue our country. Faith Harding and Prakash Ramjattan are decent leaders but like the writer, I don’t think they have a chance. The others seeking the Presidency from the PPP and PNC are without a track record and ability. Thinking about them is giving the nation more of the same from the last 10 years.
The country can depend on Ralph and Moses for good governance and for ending the chaos in our land.
I am confident they will end corruption, deal with the criminals, fix the sugar industry, restore law and order, protect the rice and bauxite industries, create new jobs, and establish new industries.
They care about country not about a few people. They will end favouritism that now pervades the political circle.
Leaders like Ramkarran and Nagamootoo are what this country need if we will rescue it from so many of the debilitating problems we face.
