The United Chargers maintained their unbeaten run when they defeated the Pakistan Magic in the finals of the Cricket Council USA sponsored three-day 2010 US Open T20 Cricket Champions tournament last Sunday at the Lauderhill Cricket Stadium, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
In their opening game last Friday, the Chargers, without their Test player Ramnaresh Sarwan who missed the competition, beat Virginia Warriors by 46 runs after making 145 in their 20 overs and dismissing the Warriors for 99 in the 18th over.
The Warriors encountered plenty of problems negotiating former Guyana and West Indies leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo who got support from David Mohamed, Rashad Marshall and Skipper Steve Massiah.
In the second game, played on the same day, under flood-lights, the Chargers were again victorious, this time at the expense of the NY Dodgers who reached 89 in 16 overs with the Chargers replying with 93 in 15 overs.
On Saturday, the United Chargers were slated to face the Sixer Daredevils but their opponents failed to show-up handing Chargers their third victory in the preliminaries.
Having qualified for the semi-finals along with the Miami Thunder, Pakistan Magic, and The Florida Destroyers, United Chargers took on Florida Destroyers, in the Stadium, while the Magic fought it out against the Miami Thunder, in the neighboring field in Sunday’s semis. The Destroyers occupied the crease first and Massiah opened the bowling with his spinners from both ends. The Destroyers opening pair of Ken Wright (33) and Guyanese Akeem Dodson (10) were very watchful and put together 46 before Dodson was removed. Donald Bennet (19*) joined Wright was LBW to Massiah at 58-2.
The last eight wickets fell for 44 runs with the final 6 wickets tumbling for just 4 runs as the Destroyers were destroyed in 19 overs. The United Chargers were able to get the required runs for victory without any serious problem.
The Pakistan Magic batted first in the finals and openers Ken Singh (29) and Hussain Haider (33) were the only two Magic batsmen who seemed to know how to handle the Chargers’ five- prong spin attack and they were all out for 113.
Wright (47*) immediately took the attack to the hapless Magic’s bowling while Hall played the supporting role, rotating the strike. By the end of the 15th over Chargers had achieved victory and the championship.
Massiah chipped in with an unbeaten 23.
