– crime raises its ugly head again in the interior
A 42-year-old gold miner had to be air-dashed to the city after he was shot and injured by a man who had entered his camp in the Aranka backdam on Friday last.
While details of the incident are sketchy, police say that Brian Benn was shot in the upper chest during a confrontation with the suspect.
The matter was reported to the police on Saturday and a team of ranks from Force Headquarters has been dispatched to the area to conduct investigations.
According to Divisional Commander, David Ramnarine, the initial report that was made to the police is one of an alleged robbery under arms.
However, he noted that since the arrival of the team of investigators to the area, a few details that emerged seem to suggest a different story.
“It is difficult to communicate with investigators at this time and we are awaiting their return from the location.” Assistant Commissioner Ramnarine said. And police in the interior are also investigating an armed robbery committed on two miners at Turtle Creek Backdam, Issano, on Saturday.
According to the police, their investigations have so far revealed that Jailall Gossai, 36, of West Coast Berbice, and 29-year-old Quincy Marshall of Hogg Street, Albouystown, were in their mining camp when they were attacked by two men who were armed with guns.
At the time of the attack, Gossai and Marshall were in their hammocks, which were cut down by the bandits and used to tie up the victims.
The bandits then proceeded to the men’s dredge where they removed eight mats containing a quantity of raw gold and escaped.
The police were summoned and they went to the area where they recovered two of the mats that were abandoned by the bandits a short distance from the camp.
The two incidents occurred at a time when police had almost put a halt to criminal activities in the interior locations.
