Region Six executive member of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Dr Veerasammy Ramayya, has deemed the newly-constructed $102M Port Mourant Market on the Corentyne, unfit for selling and a health hazard for members of the public who will shop there.
He uttered the remarks on DTV-8 on Saturday. The doctor said that the market does not have proper ventilation and he hopes that no one falls ill while they are there.
He criticized the poor vision of the administration to construct a market which does not have enough space for those who want to vend.
“The vision is such a poor one. People’s lives will suffer in that place”.
“You have to get an ambulance there every Saturday morning [the major vending day] in that market”, he opined.
He said that he was drenched in sweat after just a few minutes in the market earlier on Saturday.
He alleged discrimination against the supporters of a political persuasion that is different from the ruling party. He said that these people cannot get a stall.
“If you’re AFC or PNC, you have a problem,” Ramayya stated.
He compared the space, lighting and ventilation problems in the market to that of a sardine tin of fishes.
“There is no breathing space; it is so congested, you [the vendors] will be driven out on the streets to jump windows for a living”, he said. (Leon Suseran)
