Villagers along the East Coast Demerara corridor would be involved in stiff rivalry when the South Turkeyen Sports Committee hosts an Inter-Village day of sports at the Mahaicony Community Centre on Sunday December 19.
Activities were initially scheduled for November 28 but were pushed back following the death of renowned politician, Winston Murray.
The day’s activities commence at 09:30hrs with a six overs softball cricket competition shortly before the 11 a side football competition. The day’s activities continue with a 60 balls circle tennis competition to be followed by a 4 laps upright cycle race around the village. Basketball players will then compete for honours in a 4 team competition. There will also be a domino competition followed by a volleyball tournament.
The villages vying for honours are Mahaica, Fairfield, Mahaicony, Dundee, Belladrum Calcutta and Airy Hall among others.
Several individuals and corporate bodies have donated cash prizes, trophies and medals including the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Attorney-al law, Basil Williams, Leader of the opposition, Robert Corbin and Giftland Office Max among others. Activities are organized by Johnny ‘Overseas’ Barnwell.
