Come February 17, next, Barticians will be remembering the 11 persons who were brutally slain during a brazen attack on the quiet community almost three years ago. The slain persons will be remembered by way of a monument which has been completed.
The monument will be officially handed over to the community on December 13. It both honours and celebrates Dexter Adrain, Irving Ferreira, Edwin Gilkes, Ronald Gomes, Ashraf Khan, Deonarine Singh, Errol Thomas, Abdool Yasseen and Policemen Lance Corporal Zaheer Zakir, Constable Shane Fredericks and Constable Ron Osborne.
“Monument of Hope” is a gift to the community from J. Patrick Sheridan and Guyana Goldfields Incorporated. It signifies that Bartica will always be strong, resilient and prosperous.
The structure is a 13-foot tall black marble memorial sculpture that was commissioned by Guyana Goldfields, designed in Canada and manufactured in India after a year of searching in Guyana.
It weighs 21,000 pounds and its four bronze plaques each weigh 65 pounds. It is situated on land graciously gifted by the Diocese of Guyana and sits across from St John the Baptist Anglican Church of Bartica which was founded in 1843.
The monument site is also a few feet from the Essequibo River where the sound of running water brings additional calm to the Spirit of the Monument.
The black colour of the Monument represents the mystery of what occurred that fateful night. Black also represents the presence of all colours. Associated with the water element, black promotes self confidence and independence.
Bronze, used for the plaques is brownish gold in color. Brown is a natural down-to-earth neutral colour which represents steadfastness, simplicity, friendliness, hard work and dependability, all qualities of native Barticians.
Gold represents that abundant wealth that Bartica brings to National Development.
Guyana Goldfields is a Toronto Stock Exchange listed company that has mining concessions in the Cuyuni. The company has been exploring in Guyana since 1996 and has an advanced operation at Aurora.
