One of the main objectives of the Guyana Mangrove Restoration Project (GMRP) is to create awareness amongst the general public of the important role of mangroves in Guyana’s sea defence.
Another objective is to set up community-based mangrove action committees at pilot sites that were identified by mangrove specialists for replanting.
Over 55,000 mangrove seedlings have been replanted at Hope Beach, Mon Repos, Triumph, Beterverwagting and LBI covering a 2.8km stretch and the next site is Victoria.
For this reason, the Mangrove Action Committee (MAC) with the support of community development specialist Elsie Croal convened a community meeting at Victoria Village last weekend.
Presentations were made by members of the MAC on various aspects of the project as well as the need for community involvement. As a result, the Victoria Mangrove Action Committee headed by Chairman of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Bertie DeWeever and six other villagers was formed.
The broad-based group includes representatives of the Private Sector, religious bodies and both government and Non-Governmental Organisations.
The group will partner with MAC and provide support in preserving, restoring and managing mangrove eco-systems within their environment.
They indicated that they are willing to become involved in anti-littering campaigns, monitoring and enforcement, development of alternative livelihoods, mangrove site development and increased community awareness on the importance of mangroves.
The MAC also provides training to residents of pilot communities in mangrove seedling cultivation.
This is to ensure that those that are interested in becoming suppliers can earn an income from the service.
At the sites which are identified for the construction of groynes, the communities will also be given preference to supply the relevant materials once it is available locally.
Project Coordinator Dr. Simpson Da Silva advised that members of the Committee should let it be known that they would welcome participation from all residents who show an interest in supporting its work.
Croal assured support from the GMRP in the form of training of members so they could be effective in the execution of their duties, whilst ensuring the sustainable use of mangroves.
The next community consultation will be held at the Lusignan Community Center this Wednesday.
