Deonarine takes hat-trick for defending champions
By Sean Devers
Watching a cricket match with Essequibo is like seeing a movie in which you missed a few plots but already knew the ending.
On Friday at the Guyana National Stadium it was no different as Essequibo lost to the Rest team in the opening game of Guyana Cricket Board’s Carib/Pepsi T20 tournament despite a 4-wicket haul from 29-year-old Demerara based fast bowler Rayon Thomas.
Thomas, who played the last of his 11 First-Class matches five years ago, captured 4-21 in a wasted effort as the Rest Team reached 95-6 off 16.2 overs replying to Essequibo’s 91 all out in 16.2 overs.
Delon Heyliger top scored with 38 but only Norman Fredericks and Sherwin Murray of the other batsmen with 10 each, reached double figures as 2006 Guyana T20 player Dion Ferrier and fellow off-spinner Steven Latcha both had 3-11.
Andrew Lyght Junior, surprisingly not used as opener, finished unbeaten on 33 while Shemroy Barrington made 26 as Thomas took 4-21.
In the night’s feature game, defending champions Berbice beat Demerara by 6 runs in the final over as Narsingh Deonarine took a hat-trick to give his team an early lead in the competition which is being used to select the Guyana team for next month’s Caribbean T20 tournament.
Skipper Assad Fudadin hit 2 fours and a six in his run-a-ball 38 but only opener Richard Ramdeen who hit a cameo 29 and ‘Keeper Delbert Hicks (15*) of the other batsmen reached double figures as Berbice were restricted to 112-8 off their allotted 20 overs on a sluggish track and heavy outfield.
National under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll had 3-18 for Demerara who replied with 106-8 when their 20 overs expired as their top order of Travis Dowlin (24), Rajendra Chandrika (25) and Skipper Leon Johnson (26) all failed to build on good starts.
Deonarine, who began the final over with 14 needed for victory was struck for 4 off the first ball by Derwin Christian who hit the bowler over his head for a double off the next delivery; reducing the victory target to 8 from 4 balls.
With 5 wickets in hand Demerara were in the ascendency but Deonarine’s next three balls all provided catches for Jonathon Foo as Demerara’s lack of mental savvy under pressure cost them a game they should have won.
Deonarine’s 3-18 was supported by 2-15 from leg-spinner Davindra Bishoo who conceded just 4 runs and took a wicket in the penultimate over which began with 18 required for victory from 12 balls.
Christian (6) and Steven Jacobs (9) were dismissed in identical fashion as they lofted catches to Foo at extra cover attempting to clear the in-field while Zaheer Mohamed (0) was stupendously caught by Foo running to his right on the mid-wicket boundary to register the competition’s first hat-trick.
With 8 required from the last ball Stoll could just manage a single to spark wild celebrations in the Berbice camp.
When the hosts began their reply, Dowlin, dropped by Fudadin off Esuan Crandon on 11, pounded the pacer for consecutive boundaries in the same over and along with Chandrika gave Demerara a good 42-run start before Dowlin was run out.
Chandrika lofted Bishoo to long-on and Johnson seemed unfortunate to be given run out at 86-4 in the 17th over. This was after Chris Barnwell (5) was bowled by left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul at 81-3 in the 16th over.
When Bishoo had Wasim Haslim (3) taken at cover with 18 required Demerara were still in front before Deonarine sealed the issue in the eventful final over.
Earlier, Sewnarine Chattergoon (5) continued to struggle in the T20 format when he edged Trevon Garraway to slip while Deonarine was run out for a duck as Berbice began badly after they were asked to bat first.
A handful of spectators watched as Fudadin and Ramdeen, dropped by Jacobs off Garraway early in his innings, took the score from 17-2 with a 43-run 3rd wicket stand before Ramdeen was removed by Mohamed.
Fudadin was caught off Stoll on the deep mid-wicket boundary and when Royston Crandon seemed very unlucky to be adjudged run out for 2 and big-hitter Foo was bowled by teenage leg-spinner Amir Khan, Berbice had lost their way.
Hicks ensured they reached a three-figure total before Stoll bowled Permaul (7) off the final ball of the innings. The competition was expected to continue last evening with the Rest team facing Berbice and Demerara taking on Essequibo.
